Best Sunset Spots Ocean City NJ

Few things rival a Jersey Shore sunset. Ocean City NJ’s unique geography—a barrier island between ocean and bay—means you can watch the sun sink over the water from multiple vantage points. Here are the best places to catch sunset in OCNJ.

Why Sunset in OCNJ Is Special

Geography matters. The ocean is to the east, which means sunrises over the Atlantic. But the bay is to the west, which means sunsets over water—not buildings, not trees, but water. The sky lights up in oranges, pinks, and purples reflected in the calm bay waters.

Best Sunset Spots

Bay Avenue

The entire western side of Ocean City offers sunset views. Bay Avenue runs the length of the island with numerous spots to watch:

  • Benches and bulkheads throughout
  • Unobstructed western views
  • Parking available (easier than beach)
  • Bring chairs or sit on the rocks

Best sections: anywhere from 9th Street to 34th Street offers good views.

Tennessee Avenue Boat Ramp

Public access point with wide-open views west over the bay. Locals know this spot. Bring chairs, perhaps a picnic, and watch the show.

Corson’s Inlet

The nature preserve at the south end of the island offers stunning sunset views over the marshes. More natural setting than bayside bulkheads, with birds, marsh grass, and that wild coastal feeling.

Bayside Center Area

The kayak rental spot and surrounding bay access points provide good sunset watching. Bonus: watch people paddle back as the sun goes down.

Sunset from the Water

Bay Cruises

Several operators offer sunset cruises on the bay. Floating on calm water as the sun sets is pure magic. Some cruises allow BYOB (get drinks in Somers Point first).

Kayaking

Paddle out on a kayak or SUP for sunset. Bayside Center often has evening rental options specifically for sunset paddles.

Boat Rentals

If you have rented a pontoon or boat for the day, time your return to coincide with sunset. Anchor in a quiet spot and enjoy.

Sunset from the Beach

While the sun sets over the bay, you can still enjoy the afterglow from ocean beaches. The sky to the west lights up, and the colors reflect off the ocean too. Evening beach walks during sunset hour are lovely—less crowded, cooler temperatures, golden light.

Photography Tips

  • Arrive early: 30-45 minutes before sunset for best light
  • Shoot through: Colors change before, during, and after the sun dips
  • Silhouettes: Boats, birds, people make great subjects
  • Water reflections: Use the bay as a mirror
  • Phone works fine: Modern phones capture sunsets well
  • Look behind you: Sometimes the eastern sky glows too

Sunset Times

Summer sunset times in OCNJ:

  • Early June: Around 8:20pm
  • Late June/July: Around 8:30pm (latest of the year)
  • August: 8:00-8:20pm
  • September: 7:00-7:30pm

Check exact times before heading out.

Sunset + Dinner

Bayside Restaurants

Time dinner at a bayside restaurant for sunset views while you eat:

  • Sunset Pier Bar and Kitchen: Name says it all—waterfront sunset dining
  • Other bayside spots: Ask for water-view seating

Sunset Picnic

Pack dinner from a takeout spot, head to Bay Avenue, and picnic while the sun goes down. More romantic than any restaurant (and BYOB from Somers Point if desired).

Sunset with Kids

Making sunset special for families:

  • Pack snacks and drinks
  • Bring something to do while waiting
  • Make it a scavenger hunt (find the green flash—rare but real)
  • Let them take photos
  • Ice cream stop after

Special Sunset Events

Night in Venice

Annual September event features decorated boats parading down the bay at sunset. One of the best nights of the year in OCNJ. Plan around it if visiting in September.

Romantic Sunsets

For couples, sunset is prime time:

  • Bay Avenue bench with wine (discreetly)
  • Sunset cruise
  • Kayak paddle for two
  • Waterfront restaurant reservation
  • Beach blanket on the ocean side for afterglow

Year-Round Beauty

Sunsets are beautiful year-round. Off-season sunsets can be even more spectacular—clearer air, fewer people, dramatic winter skies. If you are visiting in fall or spring, do not skip sunset watching.

Do Not Miss It

It is easy to get caught up in boardwalk activities and miss sunset. But take at least one evening to watch the sun go down properly. Head to the bay side, find a spot, and let the day end beautifully.

This is free entertainment, no tickets required. Just show up and watch nature put on a show. Ocean City sunsets are worth the pause.
