The Flanders Hotel is a true gem of the Jersey Shore. This Prohibition-era building dominates the Ocean City skyline and boasts an incredible history. It all began back in 1922 when a group of New Jersey entrepreneurs planned to build a stately seaside hotel that would compete with the best in America. It was to be a resting place for successful businessmen and their families, combining all the modern conveniences while still maintaining an air of elegance.

Built in the Spanish Mission Revival style that would become a trademark for the South Jersey beach town, The Flanders was designed by local architect Vivian Smith. For decades, the hotel has stood watch as a guardian of the ocean and has been frequented by travelers and tourists from all over the U.S. and the world. Many families from Philadelphia have been visiting The Flanders for years, and during the 20s and 30s, it also attracted several mobsters and prohibition gangsters who thought it a safe, family-friendly refuge to discuss business in private. Vice President Charles Curtis, the three Lit Brothers of Lit Bros. Department Store on Market Street, cartoonist Al Capp, actor Jimmy Stewart, and Philadelphia’s Princess Grace Kelly were all visitors to the grand hotel known as “The Jewel of the Jersey Shore.”
